Your daughter's creativity and cognitive abilities sound remarkable. Obviously, her teacher was not minimizing that, and no one else should, either. However, the job of a teacher is not only to encourage strengths in each student, but to further strengthen weaknesses. When your daughter gets that "stepping stone" job on her way to the top, where she has to keep records, files, and spreadsheets for her boss, having practice focusing on every task will come in handy for her. Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that children become adults; and must function in an adult... quite unmerciful.... world. No, coloring in the lines does not make or break a kindergarten education. But, climbing the corporate ladder, or starting a business, or teaching for that matter, does not care if you like to do it; you just have to do it.... carefully, accurately, and on a deadline.

I'm not sure how I slipped through the cracks, but, as a child, I never worked. I know now that I had attention issues. A true creative soul, I loved music, stories, and PEOPLE more than anything. That love of people drove me to pursue a degree in teaching. Now that I am a teacher, I love my job, but I can't even describe the shock I received when I discovered all of the paperwork that was demanded daily of me. I went to school for a long time so I could work with children, share music with them, read them stories, celebrate their talents, and make them feel loved. But the government (my boss- everybody's got one) says that education must be data driven. If I want extra help with a student in any area at all, I must back up my request with documentation, documentation, documentation. I must have test scores, parent communication, and classroom interventions available at my fingertips to take to a meeting... that I just might be called away from my students to attend.

If I could change anything from my childhood, it would be that someone taught me organization, how to work carefully, and yes, how to focus on a task I didn't necessarily care about. I do the work, so I CAN do the activities I enjoy. I try to teach children the things that were never taught me. I teach in a world where 90% of elementary age boys want to be "video game testers," so I am compelled to try my best to make every student proficient at every task placed before them. It is my duty, and the duty of every teacher. Anything less is a disservice to your child. It was a disservice to me.
